We believe that the Chinese government has a growing respect for the sanctity of intellectual property rights. One reason is that more innovation is occurring in China and thus the government wants to protect the IP rights of its citizens and its businesses. Even in terms of copyrights, China is becoming a powerhouse. Beijing is the third largest producer of motion pictures, after Hollywood and Bollywood.
Here are a few statistics released by The State Intellectual Property Office of China's Ministry of Commerce:
- There were 1,076 IP infringement cases prosecuted in China during the first half of 2006.
- The number of US patent applications in China soared 23.6% in 2006, over 2004 levels.
- US companies and individuals sought 120,254 patents in China since 1985.
- US applicants sought patent protection in China for 13,000 inventions during the first half of 2006.
These are some of the issues that are discussed at IncreMental Advantage's Intellectual Property Conference Series.
